Attitude & Style

  • Inclusion isn’t “being asked to dance”.

  • Diversity is going to a party, Inclusion is being a member of party-planning committee.

Diversity is differences. It is all the things that makes us wonderfully different, it is the pie chart of identity. Include people, to consciously not gatekeep, to consciously not exclude.

The Technology Priest hood

Knowledge is power and so it tends to be hoarded. Experts in any field rarely want people to understand what they do, and generally enjoy putting people down.

Ted Nelson’s Computer Lib, 1974

When you are a expert in some field, you can address your expertise in intuitive ways. You can either give it generously, “Hey, I know this and you can know this too” or “Just leave the expertise to me, I know what I am talking about.

Gate Keeper

“GateKeepers are the stoppers at a high level, data decision makers who control information flow to an entire social system. Based on personal preference, professional experience, social influences, or bias they allow certain information to pass through the their audience”

ex. don’t learn python first, learn c++ and then python or else masscommtheory.com

Don’t be a GateKeeper.

What to do then? - Share your energy

  • Put out good work.

  • Don’t waste your keystrokes. you have a finite number of keystrokes left in your hands before you die. try keysleft.com

  • Share your experiences.

  • Be kind

  • That energy will come back to you.

  • Your blog shows your experience, twice a week can help 100 in just one year.

share liberally and at it’s essence.

Professional?

The power of being old is the ability to have failed safely for a long period of time.

We are all amateurs. There are no professionals. Do you have 20 years of Experience?
Or the same year’s experience, 20 times?

Did you learn every year? or did you just sleep walked the couple of those years? Did you just have those years happen?

Stuff Happens, ex. You might’ve been sleeping in your sophomore years. That’s okay because you have to identify that, you need to know that happened and acknowledge it.

Professionals

Swiss Army Knife.

It’s OK to be a funny little knife that isn’t amazing at everything, When you need a screwdriver you have it, it’s not meant to be a toolbox, But it’s important that you should atleast be a good knife.

Don’t skimp the basics.

That’s what you can ask to your mentors.

Sponsors vs Mentor

  • Find a Mentor.
  • You’re never too old to get good advice.

A sponsor can be a

  • Mentor
  • Strategizer
  • connector
  • opportunity Giver
  • Advocate

Mentor is not Forever

  • Mentor in phases (Education, Job, etc.)
  • Mentorship is a two-way street, not a scheduled regular lecture.
